On 1 September 2026, Caspar Veldkamp officially arrived in Beijing to assume his duties as Head of the EU Delegation to China and Ambassador of the European Union to China. He is the first Dutch diplomat to hold this position.
Born in 1964, Mr. Veldkamp holds a degree in Public Administration from Erasmus University Rotterdam and Leiden University. He joined the Dutch diplomatic service in 1992 and has accumulated more than 30 years of diplomatic and political experience. He has successively served as Ambassador of the Netherlands to Israel, Ambassador of the Netherlands to Greece, Director of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Member of the Dutch House of Representatives and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands. Proficient in Dutch, English, French and German, he has extensive hands‑on experience in bilateral and multilateral diplomacy.
On his first day in office, Mr. Veldkamp met and posed for a group photo with all staff members of the EU Delegation to China. In his inaugural remarks, he noted that he was greatly honoured to take on this mission. He will represent the 27 EU Member States and 450 million EU citizens to conduct constructive communication with China and jointly open a new chapter for China‑EU exchanges and cooperation.
As head of the EU Delegation to China, Mr. Veldkamp will chair monthly coordination meetings of envoys from the 27 EU Member States and oversee all EU diplomatic affairs in China. His priorities cover China‑EU economic and trade relations, policy dialogue and difference management, to advance practical exchanges across various fields between China and the EU.
